Description
1987 Buick GNX – 3k Miles, Turbocharged 3.8L V6, ASC/McLaren
This 1987 Buick GNX is one of just 547 examples built to commemorate the final year of the Grand National and was modified by ASC/McLaren Performance Technologies for increased performance and exclusivity. Finished in the model’s signature black exterior over a black and Sand Gray cloth interior, this example shows just 3,000 miles and is powered by a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 paired with a Turbo-Hydramatic 200R4 four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential.
Factory enhancements include GNX-specific suspension and drivetrain modifications, Garrett T3 turbocharger, upgraded air-to-air intercooler, 16″ cross-lace GNX wheels, and composite fender flares. The GNX remains one of the most celebrated and collectible performance cars of the 1980s and is considered a cornerstone of American turbocharged muscle. This example retains its GNX-specific Stewart-Warner instrumentation, original interior, and presents in excellent condition throughout.

Exterior
Finished in its original black paint, all 547 GNXs received identical exterior treatment, which included composite wheel arch flares, heat-extracting front fender vents, a three-piece rear spoiler, GNX badging, and dual exhaust outlets. Additional equipment includes an automatic power antenna, sport mirrors, rear window defogger, and xenon-style sealed beams. The car retains its factory chrome-trimmed 16″ cross-lace alloy wheels, each with GNX center caps, mounted on BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2 tires.
Interior
Inside, the GNX features front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black and Sand Gray cloth, complete with Turbo 6 headrest embroidery. The dashboard houses GNX-specific Stewart-Warner gauges, including a 160-mph speedometer, 8k-rpm tachometer, and readouts for boost, oil pressure, temperature, and fuel level. A leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel and Delco AM/FM/cassette stereo with a graphic equalizer round out the period-correct interior. Additional features include power windows, air conditioning, cruise control, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. The five-digit odometer shows 2,200 miles, with approximately 240 added under current ownership.
Performance & Powertrain
Under the hood, the 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 was upgraded by ASC/McLaren with a Garrett T3 turbocharger, a larger air-to-air intercooler, and a low-restriction exhaust system, resulting in a factory-rated 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. Additional mechanical enhancements include a factory-upgraded oil cooler, and a limited-slip differential with a GNX-branded aluminum rear cover. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Turbo-Hydramatic 200R4 four-speed automatic transmission. A recent oil change was completed in preparation for sale.
The GNX was also fitted with revised rear suspension components including a Panhard rod, torque arm, and additional cross-member. Braking is handled by power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drums.
Summary
Representing the pinnacle of Buick’s muscle car lineage, the 1987 GNX was a send-off unlike any other, combining sinister looks with serious turbocharged performance. With just 3,000 miles, one-owner provenance, and a legacy tied to ASC/McLaren, this GNX is a collector-grade icon and one of the most desirable GM performance cars of the 1980s.
