1981 DeLorean DMC-12 – 9,354 Miles – Iconic Stainless-Steel Time Capsule
This 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 presents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a remarkably preserved example of one of the most recognizable sports cars of the 1980s. Best known for its starring role in the legendary sci-fi film franchise Back to the Future, the DMC-12’s allure is matched by its innovative design and engineering. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro with input from John DeLorean and engineering by Lotus’s Colin Chapman, the car features unpainted stainless-steel bodywork mounted over a fiberglass underbody and epoxy-coated steel chassis. Power comes from a rear-mounted 2.85-liter PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) V6 engine, paired with a desirable five-speed manual transmission, delivering drive to the rear wheels.
This example shows just 9,354 miles on its five-digit odometer and has seen extremely limited use, with less than 400 miles added during its most recent long-term ownership as part of a private classic car collection. Carefully housed in a climate-controlled environment, the car has been well preserved and remains in highly original condition throughout.
The DMC-12 retains its factory staggered 14-inch and 15-inch finned alloy wheels, and the interior is finished in grey ruched leather with matching grey carpeting. The correct original stereo system is still installed, and the interior surfaces remain clean and free of damage, with only minor staining present on the carpet. The seats show very little wear, reflecting the car’s low mileage. Mechanically, the car is reported to run and drive well with no known electrical or mechanical faults.
Cosmetically, the iconic stainless-steel panels are in very good condition with no evidence of prior bodywork damage. A small blemish is visible on the front bumper, but overall, the exterior presents cleanly with the brushed finish showing consistent sheen. All body panels align well and function as intended.
Included with the vehicle are the original owner’s manuals, technical manual, and a collection of period DeLorean literature including several magazines dedicated to the marque, vintage newspaper articles, and brochures. Additionally, the car comes with branded accessories such as a fitted car cover and a DeLorean luggage carrier that mounts to the rear of the vehicle.
A genuine automotive cultural icon, this DeLorean DMC-12 stands out not only for its distinctive design and storied history, but also for its exceptional preservation and low mileage. It is a rare find that will appeal to collectors, enthusiasts, and fans of 1980s automotive design alike.
