Description
1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – Rare HO 455, Tremec TKX 5-Speed, and Refined Performance Upgrades
Overview
This 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is a rare and beautifully restored example of Pontiac’s muscle car legacy, one of just 2,116 units produced for the model year. Refurbished in 2018 and acquired by the current owner in 2021, it combines factory high-output power with tasteful modern upgrades, all while retaining its unmistakable Trans Am identity. Offered on dealer consignment, it includes a removed original four-speed transmission, an assembly manual, and a clean Texas title.
Exterior
Originally finished in Cameo White, the car was professionally refinished during its restoration and now wears a crisp white paint complemented by bold blue Trans Am stripes. Signature styling cues include a shaker hood, front air dam and spoiler, fender vents, and a three-piece rear spoiler. Dual exhaust outlets complete the aggressive stance.
The car rides on 17″ aluminum Year One honeycomb-style wheels, fitted with Nitto NT555 G2 tires—255/45 front and 285/40 rear—installed in 2025. Suspension upgrades include QA1 front coilovers and Detroit Speed Engineering rear leaf springs, delivering improved handling while maintaining a period-correct look. Braking is handled by power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.
Interior
Inside, the cabin is finished in blue vinyl upholstery, with front bucket seats and split rear seating. Matching blue carpeting and Trans Am-logo floor mats add to the cohesive presentation. A Hurst shifter sits in the center console, providing a tactile connection to the upgraded drivetrain.
The Formula steering wheel fronts an engine-turned dashboard fascia, housing a full complement of Stewart-Warner-style gauges, including a 160-mph speedometer, tachometer with inset clock, and auxiliary readouts for fuel level, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage. The five-digit odometer shows 63,000 miles, with approximately 500 miles added under current ownership. Additional features include manual-crank windows, front shoulder belts, an AM radio, and a heater.
Powertrain
Under the hood lies Pontiac’s legendary 455ci High Output V8, factory-rated at 335 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The engine features a four-barrel carburetor and delivers robust performance with a classic muscle car soundtrack.
In 2021, a Tremec TKX five-speed manual transmission was installed, offering modern drivability and improved highway cruising. The original four-speed manual transmission was removed and is included in the sale. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential, enhancing traction and performance.
