Description
1970 Pontiac Fire Chief Restomod – LS1 Power, Frame-Off Restoration, Hand-Painted Custom
This 1970 Pontiac Fire Chief is a fully built restomod based on an original Esprit model, finished in custom hand-painted red over a tastefully reimagined black interior with leather and red baseball stitching. Discovered in a California warehouse where it had been stored since 1997, this car underwent a documented frame-off restoration and has been transformed into a high-performance custom with modern drivability and dramatic presence. Power comes from a GM LS1 V8 mated to a 4L60E automatic transmission, with performance upgrades throughout, including a Magnaflow exhaust, Auburn Positraction rear end, and four-wheel disc brakes.
The body was refinished in deep red with laser-straight panels and hand-painted “Fire Chief” graphics, including the custom Phoenix on the hood and detailed lettering on the rear and sides. The original factory door handles, window trim, grille, and tail light bezels have been blacked out for a more aggressive look, and the rear bumper is color-matched to the body. The car sits on 18″ Budnik Matrix wheels wrapped in Nitto performance tires, paired with upgraded suspension and laser-cut fender braces for added structural support.
Inside, the Pontiac styling is preserved but enhanced with custom black seats featuring leather inlays and red baseball stitching, along with a leather-wrapped center console, gear shifter, emergency brake, and Trans Am steering wheel. A set of oversized Speedhut gauges is mounted in the factory cluster, maintaining a classic look with modern precision. The original tilt steering column has been rebuilt, and factory A/C remains in place and operational. A Pioneer AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth stereo with Kicker speakers adds modern sound to this vintage muscle machine.
Under the hood, the LS1 V8 is managed by a CBM Motorsports-built wiring harness and computer, with a new GM-style radiator and dual electric fans for reliable cooling. A 3.43 rear gear setup with Auburn Positraction provides smooth traction, and power steering and brakes round out the modern driving experience. The undercarriage is clean and fully restored, with the only noted rust during the build—a small section of the trunk pan—repaired properly.
This Fire Chief restomod is accompanied by PHS documentation, the original build sheet, and window sticker. With only ~1,100 miles since the restoration, this is a turn-key Pro Touring–style classic that blends authentic Pontiac heritage with custom craftsmanship.
