Description
1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum – Matching Numbers, Lightly Driven, Period-Correct
This 1968 Dodge Charger R/T is a second-generation example powered by its factory-original, matching-numbers 440ci Magnum V8 paired with a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Acquired by the current owner in 2006, the car had already undergone restoration at that time and has since been driven approximately 2,000 miles, with 63,915 miles currently shown on the odometer (true mileage unknown).
The Charger underwent a major styling overhaul for the 1968 model year, debuting its now-iconic “Coke bottle” silhouette, full-width hidden headlight grille, and sweeping fastback roofline. Finished in a deep blue over black vinyl interior, this example wears the correct black “Bumble Bee” R/T tail stripes and rides on Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. The exterior presents well overall with some minor cosmetic flaws noted, including a small paint crack just aft of the driver’s door and a few shallow scratches on the trunk and passenger rear quarter.
The body appears straight with well-aligned panels, and the chrome trim, bumpers, and glass are in excellent condition. The sweeping rear vinyl roof is free from bubbling and remains presentable, though it could benefit from a deeper cleaning. The chassis was undercoated during restoration, and while the underside has not been washed or detailed since, it remains tidy and solid in appearance as shown in the gallery. While restoration records are not available, the fluids have been regularly maintained by the owner in a lift-equipped garage.
The black vinyl interior is believed to retain its original upholstery, with replacement carpeting likely installed during the restoration. The factory “Tick-Tock-Tach” was rebuilt and re-calibrated in June 2008, and all gauges are reported to be functional. Minor wear includes a loosening of the top rear corner of the driver-side door panel and aging foam in the seats. The interior’s appearance is consistent with a low-use example and suggests that the mileage may be accurate.
Under the hood, the matching-numbers 440 Magnum V8 delivers an SAE gross-rated 375 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. The engine bay presents as clean and period-correct, though the seller notes a minor exhaust manifold leak. The transmission and rear differential are said to be original-type components, although their ID tags are no longer present. Power steering was added by the current owner for drivability, but the original components are included should a future owner wish to return the car to factory spec.
