History & Provenance
Purchased new on May 5th, 1967 from Means Pontiac in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this first-year Firebird Convertible was relocated almost immediately to California, where it remained under the care of its original owner for over five decades. Soon after purchase, the original owner married Sal Fish, the iconic motorsports publisher and former head of SCORE International, who helped elevate Baja racing to international acclaim.
This example is offered on behalf of the long-term owners by a dealer, accompanied by its original bill of sale, build sheet, owner’s manuals, and a clean California title.
Exterior
Wearing a bare-metal repaint in 1991 in its original Regimental Red, the car presents today with impressive shine and integrity. The paint has recently been rubbed out and all chrome polished, giving it a vibrant, well-preserved appearance. The white convertible top was installed at the time of repaint and remains in good overall condition.
Some expected age-related imperfections are noted, including minor scratches, paint chips, and a star chip in the windshield. It retains its original black California license plates, a prized detail for provenance-minded collectors. The 15″ Pontiac Rally wheels are wrapped in brand new Goodyear Eagle radial tires.
Interior
Finished in white vinyl, the cabin remains largely original and unmodified, showcasing a wonderful level of patina consistent with long-term, careful use. Some discoloration and aging are visible on the seats and armrests, and the plastic trim shows typical yellowing. The dash cover is intact and crack-free, while the original AM radio is still fitted and said to function properly.
Instrumentation and controls are reported to be in working order. The odometer shows approximately 51,000 miles, though the true mileage is believed to be higher. In the trunk, a surface-rusted floor is noted, and the original space-saver spare and unused jack are still present—though the trunk mat is missing.
Mechanical
Power is delivered by a 326 cubic inch V8, mated to a column-shifted automatic transmission. Recent servicing includes the installation of a new carburetor (the original unit is included in the sale), along with a transmission service, new valve cover and oil pan gaskets, hoses, belts, spark plugs, and ignition wires.
The engine bay has been detailed and repainted, and the undercarriage recently received a dry ice detailing, preserving the original surfaces while highlighting structural cleanliness. A Borla stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted in place of the stock unit, adding a subtle performance tone and long-lasting durability.
