Description
1966 Chevrolet Nova SS | 377ci V8, Muncie 4-Speed, Ford 9″, 4-Wheel Discs, Long-Term Owner
This 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS is a purpose-built street machine that’s been under the same ownership for over 22 years and features a well-documented build centered around power, simplicity, and vintage attitude. Finished in bold yellow over black vinyl, this SS was treated to a repaint approximately 17 years ago and fitted with a custom-built 377ci small-block V8, backed by a Muncie M21 four-speed manual and a Ford 9-inch rear end with Trac Lock limited-slip and 3.70:1 gears.
Underneath, it features a dual-circuit 4-wheel disc brake system, upgraded sway bars, and 15″ Rally wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/As. Power exits through wheel well headers, giving the car an unmistakable sound and stance. A fiberglass hood, fuel cell, and sport-style lap belts add to the no-nonsense muscle car vibe. The car is now offered with a collection of parts receipts, an invoice for the engine machine work, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
Exterior
Originally finished in a different color, this Nova was refinished in yellow nearly two decades ago. The color suits the aggressive stance and motorsport styling. Paint shows well overall, though paint bubbles are noted on the roof, visible in the gallery. A fiberglass hood reduces weight up front, and a white removable trunk-mounted fuel cell sits in place of the factory tank (which is included with the sale). Chrome bumpers, stainless trim, and dual mirrors complete the look, along with vintage blue California plates.
Wheels & Suspension
The car rides on 15″ Rally wheels with flat-disc center caps and period-correct BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The suspension is enhanced with front and rear sway bars to reduce body roll and improve cornering confidence. The braking system was upgraded to a dual-circuit four-wheel disc setup, offering solid stopping performance to match the power under the hood.
Interior
Inside, the Nova retains a mostly stock look with a black vinyl interior, bucket seats, and nylon loop carpeting. A center console and three-spoke sport steering wheel frame the cockpit, while a trio of aftermarket auxiliary gauges and a column-mounted tachometer provide vital information. Vintage motorsport-style lap belts add a touch of race-inspired safety.
The factory horizontal-sweep speedometer is currently inoperative, and the five-digit odometer reads 55k miles, though it is disconnected and the actual mileage is unknown.
Engine & Drivetrain
At the heart of the build is a 377ci V8, constructed using a GM 400ci small block mated to a 350ci steel crank, with Dart cast iron cylinder heads, ARP hardware, and a Comp Cams 246 camshaft with roller rockers. Induction comes from a Holley 4150 carburetor with Barry Grant bowls and metering blocks, mounted to an Edelbrock aluminum intake, with fuel delivered by an electric pump. Spark is provided by an Accel HEI ignition system, and a set of wheel well-exit headers provides the exhaust note and visual impact to match the car’s raw attitude.
The engine was fully built under current ownership, and the oil was just changed prior to sale. A detailed invoice from the engine machine shop is included.
Power is sent through a Zoom clutch, Weber aluminum flywheel, and a Muncie M21 4-speed transmission to a Ford 9-inch rear axle equipped with Trac Lock and 3.70:1 gearing. A fresh set of 4.10:1 gears is also included for those who want a more aggressive final drive.
Undercarriage
Photos of the underbody show a clean, dry, and well-maintained chassis. The fuel cell setup is cleanly mounted, and the headers, suspension components, and drivetrain show little to no corrosion. Additional underbody shots are provided in the gallery.
Driving Impressions
With a high-revving 377ci V8 and stout Muncie 4-speed, this Nova delivers the raw, mechanical feel that made muscle cars icons. The steering feels direct, brakes are confidence-inspiring thanks to the disc conversion, and the lightweight build paired with the short gearing gives it an old-school drag-strip vibe on the street.
Summary
This 1966 Nova SS is a perfect blend of period styling and modern performance hardware, built by an owner who enjoyed the car and made thoughtful improvements over two decades. While it started life as a six-cylinder car, it’s now a properly sorted and tastefully modified SS-style muscle coupe with the documentation, sound, and performance to back it up.
