Description
1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 289 4-Speed – Restored, Upgraded, and Ready to Drive
Overview
This 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback is a tastefully restored and mechanically upgraded example of one of the most iconic pony cars ever built. Acquired by the seller a year ago as a partially completed project, it has since undergone extensive mechanical and cosmetic work, including the installation of a rebuilt 289ci V8, a resealed four-speed manual transmission, and a host of performance and comfort enhancements. The car is offered by a private party with service records from current ownership, a list of replaced parts since 2018, and several spares.
Exterior
Refinished in glossy black, the Mustang’s fastback silhouette is complemented by GT-style trim and 14″ Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in staggered-width BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The front tires were reportedly replaced in 2018, and two additional BFGoodrich tires are included in the sale along with a damaged display wheel and a steel spare with an older whitewall tire. The dual exhaust system is welded throughout and exits cleanly through the rear valance, adding a muscular tone to the car’s visual and auditory presence.
Interior
The cabin has been refurbished in a striking red and white vinyl scheme, featuring replacement seat covers, door panels, carpets, headliner, and dash pad. A full-length center console with courtesy lighting anchors the interior, joined by a RetroSound stereo, door-mounted speakers, and a wood-rimmed steering wheel. A 1966 GT-style instrument cluster has been added, and the five-digit odometer was reset when the engine was replaced, now showing approximately 2,000 miles. A reproduction heater box with a three-speed blower switch has also been installed.
Powertrain
The heart of this Mustang is a Stage 1 rebuilt 289ci V8 from Jasper Engines, installed in 2018. It features a Holley 600-cfm carburetor mounted on an Edelbrock intake manifold, supported by a refreshed fuel system including a new tank, sending unit, and pump. Additional upgrades include a water pump, thermostat housing, pulleys, harmonic balancer, engine mounts, Bosch battery with Autolite cover, aluminum radiator, chrome air cleaner, alternator, and Monte Carlo bar.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a resealed four-speed T10 manual transmission fitted with a Ram clutch and refurbished shift linkage. The seller notes that the third gear synchro is worn. The drivetrain continues through a driveshaft with new U-joints to an 8″ differential with 3.00:1 gears.
Chassis & Suspension
Handling is enhanced by a Shelby-style quick-ratio steering box, replacement idler arm, tie rod ends, suspension bushings, control arms, ball joints, front and rear springs, KYB shocks, and updated parking brake hardware. The car is equipped with unassisted steering and front disc brakes for confident control.
Summary
This 1965 Mustang Fastback blends classic styling with thoughtful mechanical upgrades and a fresh interior, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking a turn-key driver with vintage appeal. With a rebuilt powertrain, GT-inspired details, and a host of recent improvements, it’s ready to be enjoyed on the road or admired in any collection.
