Description
1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale – Coachbuilt Bertone Body, Factory Demo History, 49k Miles
This 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale (Tipo 101.20) is a beautifully restored, matching-numbers example believed to have been used by the Alfa Romeo factory as a North American demonstrator before being sold through Max Hoffman’s New York-based distributorship. Finished in its original shade of Alfa Red over a well-preserved interior, this SS is a striking representative of one of Bertone’s most elegant and aerodynamic postwar designs.
Built on a shortened Sprint chassis, the Sprint Speciale featured a hand-formed body penned by Franco Scaglione at Bertone. Powered by a 1,290cc all-aluminum DOHC inline-4 with twin Weber carburetors, the car produced 100 horsepower and delivered an impressive 125 mph top speed when new. This example retains its factory 5-speed manual gearbox, 4-wheel Alfin drum brakes, and correct mechanical specification, providing a lively and engaging driving experience.
The car underwent a careful restoration, including a repaint in the correct Alfa Red. Emphasis was placed on preserving originality while addressing cosmetic and mechanical needs. Today, the car presents beautifully, showing just under 50,000 miles and offering both strong driving performance and concours-worthy styling. Lightweight, rev-happy, and wrapped in some of the most graceful coachwork ever fitted to an Alfa Romeo, this Sprint Speciale is a rare opportunity for collectors seeking an exceptional example with documented provenance and international history.
