Overview:
This 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari is a rare two-door station wagon project offered on behalf of the current owner. Representing one of Pontiac’s most distinctive and luxurious offerings of the 1950s, the Custom Safari combined mid-century styling flair with practical wagon utility. This example is a non-driving project vehicle that was reportedly subject to a multi-year refurbishment effort between 2002 and 2010, during which it received mechanical and cosmetic attention, including a color change. Since then, it has been under current ownership and remains incomplete. The car features a running 347ci Strato-Streak V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, though the braking system is currently inoperative and much of the interior is disassembled.
Exterior:
Originally finished from the factory in Seacrest Green (paint code TTS), this Safari was refinished in gray around 2010. The classic 1957 body design is accented by extended rear tailfins, chrome bumpers, bright window trim, and polished stainless moldings. Additional exterior features include dual chrome side mirrors, a split tailgate with a lift glass, and dual exhaust outlets. While the body presents in fair cosmetic condition for a project of its kind, some exterior lighting is non-functional, and rust is noted on the frame. The car rides on 14″ steel wheels fitted with bright Pontiac-branded hubcaps and mounted with 215/75 Sigma whitewall tires.
Interior:
The cabin originally featured Olive Green Metallic and Pastel Green leather upholstery (trim code 246), which remains on the bench seats. The matching dashboard and steering column are in place, as is a Pontiac push-button AM radio, heater, and locking glovebox. The two-spoke steering wheel with chrome horn ring fronts a 120-mph horizontal-sweep speedometer and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, and amperage. Interior restoration remains incomplete: the carpeting, door panels, and headliner have been removed, though Dynamat insulation has been installed underfoot. The rear window liftgate is present but requires adjustment to align properly.
Mechanical:
Power is supplied by a Strato-Streak 347ci V8 equipped with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, said to have been installed during the last known mechanical updates around 2010. The engine is noted to run, though the vehicle has not been driven under current ownership. It sends power to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The car is equipped with power steering and sits on 2″ drop spindles. However, the power-assisted drum brake system is not functional and will require attention prior to operation.
Documentation and Extras:
The car retains its factory trim tag, which decodes to verify this as a 1957 Custom Safari two-door wagon (Style 57 2764DF) built in California (Body CL 1221), finished in Seacrest Green with matching interior trim. The sale includes spare parts, a fitted car cover, Pontiac manufacturer’s literature, and a clean title.
Summary:
Offered here is a seldom-seen and highly collectible 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari—a two-door wagon that exemplifies GM’s bold styling and engineering of the era. With its rare body style, running V8, and many original features intact, this is an ideal candidate for a full restoration. Whether you’re seeking an iconic ’50s cruiser to restore or a platform for a custom project, this non-driving Safari presents a compelling opportunity.
